50 Years Ago

Today is the 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, and Roger Youderian in a jungle in Ecuador.

If you don’t know the story, click on the above links. If you want even more information, there is a documentary available for purchase: Beyond the Gates. I think it won an award at the Heartland Film Festival two years ago.

There’s also a movie coming out in a few weeks. End of the Spear is a dramatization of the missionaries’ attempts to reach the Auca people.

I wonder how many churches recognized this anniversary today. It seems like it’s something we need to continually remind each other – persecution continues in our “tolerant” 21st century.
