American Idol & Country Music

Watched the final competition for American Karaoke…I mean, Idol…tonight. The kids enjoyed it. I wasn’t that impressed. I’ve enjoyed some of the last few weeks of American Idol because of the conversations they have sparked with Christy, but that’s a different story.

So, after American Idol went off the air, I quickly changed the channel because the kids were still up and I didn’t want them to see any of House (graphic content…blah, blah, blah). Of course, I could have turned it off, but that’s a different issue for a different time.

I flip to CBS and see Carrie Underwood singing at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Coincidence? I think not. Christy’s a big Carrie Underwood fan, so we kept it on. Conveniently enough, Kelly Clarkson appeared later in the show. I was amazed at how much better these two ladies are than the two contestants who performed tonight.

I don’t generally listen to country music. In fact, I can’t stand most of it on the radio. But I’ll sit and watch a 3 hour country music awards show. I can’t even stand to watch the Grammys. I wonder why that is. I’m sure some of it has to do with the talent that they showcase. They’re not afraid to put their best foot forward – and the artists seem to go at it wholeheartedly. It doesn’t appear as self-centered and arrogant as the Grammys do. In all, it’s generally fun. I like it. Just keep the whining guitars and the “My wife left me and my dog just died” songs out and I’d be a happy camper.

A few thoughts about tonight’s show:

* It’s a good thing for Tony Stewart that he’s in a profession where he gets to wear a hat. I’m pretty sure his hair was cut crooked!

* That Buck Owens tribute was…interesting…to say the least. Christy hasn’t stopped laughing at how out of place the drummer was.

* When are they gonna figure out that the artist who performs immediately before the award is going to win the award? It’s so convenient, ain’t it?

* I liked Little Big Town (they performed Boondocks). If all country music was like the live performance (it was different than the studio recording…as it should be), I could get into it more, methinks.

* Quote of the night was from Reba McEntire: “I don’t know why I was so worried about hosting this thing. If the Dixie Chicks can perform with their foot in their mouths, I could handle this” OK – the last part was a paraphrase, but it was still a great quote!
