Return to Space

I remember when Discovery led the U.S. back to space after the Challenger disaster. I was in middle school – 7th grade, I think. We were sitting in Social Studies, and Ms. Zimmerman turned on the radio and we listened to the broadcast. All of the other TVs had already been taken.

The thing that sticks out most in my mind is Ms. Zimmerman cried at liftoff. I don’t know if she was emotional because she was so happy we had returned to space, or because of the loss of life on Challenger. It was probably more about the previous disaster.

Either that, or we made her cry – which wouldn’t surprise me.

Space flight is always newsworthy, I think. It’s a shame that a tragedy is the only thing that will get the news outlets to cover launches live anymore.
