Whereas May 4 is commonly known as Star Wars Day: “May the Fourth be with you,” and all that jazz. It’s become one of my favorite days. Many groups and organizations will be celebrating this day as an excuse to celebrate all things Star Wars – including the release of The Bad Batch!
Whereas there’s also Revenge of the Fifth. Or is it Revenge of the Sixth? I prefer the Sixth, but I’m sure some people will disagree. Because if there’s one thing Star Wars fans have figured out, it’s how to disagree with each other.
And then there’s Space Day on the first Friday in May.
Whereas the original Star Wars Day occurs on May 25 in celebration of the initial release of Star Wars (back before they called it Episode IV: A New Hope). Many people celebrated this day as Star Wars Day before anyone thought to officially recognize a Star Wars Day.
And whereas one cannot fit the entire Skywalker saga, the additional Star Wars movies, The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, and The Bad Batch all into a single day,
This is the way May.
But wait!
Yes. I know what you’re thinking.
May cannot be Star Wars Month.
There’s the Kentucky Derby. And although it’s a lot like prom, in its execution, it’s a big deal to some people.
There’s also the Indianapolis 500 at the end of May. That’s a big deal in Indy. It kind of consumes the entire month.
Uh…hello?
It’s common knowledge that George Lucas was a big fan of racing. He even wanted to become a professional race car driver while growing up. He liked things to go fast.* This is even reflected in American Graffiti.
And in case you missed it, Star Wars moves pretty fast.
There’s speeder bikes…
And fathier racing on Canto Bight…
And dogfights…
And chases through asteroid fields…
In case you’ve forgotten, there’s also podracing…
Besides, IndyCar and Star Wars have teamed up before. A (not so) long time ago…Marco Andretti drove a car promoting The Clone Wars back in 2008.
Yeah. She’s fast enough for you, old man.
So grab your blue milk. Throw some rontos or porgs on the grill. Get down with your bad self like a group of Ewoks dancing with Sy Nootles and the Max Rebo Band.
Because Star Wars Day…no…Star Wars MONTH is here to stay.
