Say it ain’t so, Coach!

We leave the TV on during the day when we’re not here. I’m not sure why, but it seems to help the dogs. I promise, this isn’t just to make us feel better. When we leave and the TV isn’t on, you can hear the dogs miles away. Well, maybe not that far, but you can definitely hear Diego howling when we get in the car. He’s always been scared of being alone since his first 4th of July when he discovered the comforting sounds of fireworks.

So I had to run home for a second this morning. I had to grab some Scotch tape or something like that. The news crawling across ESPN said that Tony Dungy was retiring from football. When I got back to the office, I announced the news to our secretary and then scoured the interweb to see if ESPN really knew what they were talking about. Then I found this article, discussing how Coach had been going through the Colts complex, saying goodbye to players and staff.

He’s the winningest coach in Colts history. He was the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl. He led the Colts to six straight 12-win seasons. And he went to the playoffs 10 straight seasons. That’s quite a list of accomplishments.

While this news is certainly sad for the Colts and Colts fans, it’s not a surprise. In his book, Quiet Strength, Coach Dungy made it abundantly clear that his life was about much more than football. And I certainly think his actions have shown that. Coach Dungy has backed up his words with his actions. And God has given him a much larger vision as to what kind of impact his life is going to be.

While I’m not sure about how the Colts will do next season, Dungy’s testimony reminds all of us that life is much more than football. That’s a pretty remarkable thing, coming from a coach in professional sports. And I’m thankful for the example he has been to his team, to the city, and to the rest of the state of Indiana. I just wish he could have ended his career winning a championship in Tampa. It would’ve been a nice bookend to an amazing career.

I’m excited to see what God has in store for Tony Dungy.

So where were you when you heard the news that Coach is retiring?
