Hoops Highlights – Day 1

Like I said earlier, I didn’t think there would be too many upsets this year.  Unfortunately, I’m already wrong on two of my four “major” upsets.  Glad Butler was able to hang on, though.  With so few upsets today, history as I recall it (and I could be way off) shows that tomorrow’s going to be full of upsets.  We’ll see if that holds true.

Here are my favorite highlights from today’s festivities:

* Watching the end of the VCU vs. Duke game in a sports bar with a very pro-Duke crowd.  Tournaments are always better when the Dukies are no longer around.

* The above bar did not have any of its TVs turned to the IU/Gonzaga game, so I went across the street to another sports viewing establishment.  There was one other guy in front of the TV that was showing the IU game.  He had a Gonzaga sweatshirt on.  I sat next to him.  We carried on some pleasant conversation.  Found out later his name is Jeff.  Then another guy came in and saw my Hoosiers shirt, said he was for IU, and sat down next to me.  His name is Matt (easy to remember, huh?) The three of us talked and watched the game.  Matt ordered some food and told us to eat his chips & cheese.  After his continued insistence, we obliged.  Free food while watching a game is always a highlight!

* During our conversation, we discovered that the three of us are Christians and that we share some very similar theologies – even though we come from very different denominational backgrounds.  Matt is leaving soon on a missions trip to Cambodia where he’ll visit an orphanage.  Pretty cool stuff!

* After the game, Jeff came back from paying his bill and told us that he had taken care of my tab as well as Matt’s.  I only had Coke (& Matt’s chips), but it was still a very nice gesture – especially since we were rooting for different teams.  Jeff told us he works for the Press and he’d try to get a story done on the church’s trip to the Cambodian orphanage.

* Did I mention the Hoosiers won?  If revenge is a dish best served cold, then a year is probably long enough.

It’s late.  I smell like smoke.  Time to go take a shower.  This is Madness, I tell you!  March Madness!!
