Sage Advice

I have really enjoyed my Second Temple Jewish Literature class. I wish churches would talk more about the intertestamental (I know it’s not a “scholarly” word…but that’s what it is…the time between the Old and New Testaments) period. The history interesting, and studying the literature that came out of that time helps you understand the Jewish worldview at the time of Christ.

We began looking into Ben Sira (aka Ecclesiasticus, aka Sirach) yesterday in class. It’s a long book, and we’re going to take several class sessions to discuss it (I think Rollston really enjoys the book). It’s written by a scribe who is teaching young scribes the principles of their occupation and how to become wise. As an added bonus, he offers some sage advice on how one should behave in the royal court:

“Do not reach out your hand for everything you see (at the dinner table), and do not crowd your neighbor at the dish.” ~ Ben Sira 31:14. In other words, don’t be a slob or a pig!

“Do not try to prove your strength by wine-drinking, for wine has destroyed many.” ~ Ben Sira 31:25. True, true.

“Wine is very life to human beings if taken in moderation. What is life to one who is without wine? It has been created to make people happy.” ~ Ben Sira 31: 27. Maybe he likes the bottle a little too much.

And, my favorite from yesterday…

“If you are overstuffed with food, get up to vomit and you will have relief.” ~ Ben Sira 31:21. Remember that as you go through your day.
