“D-Day” for Davis

Apparently, today is the day the world is supposed to find out if Mike Davis keeps his job at IU. The Davis Haters and the Bobby (Knight) Bashers are coming out full force on the web. If the firing of the football coach this past fall is any indication, Davis could be on his way out.

This time three years ago, Mike Davis could do no wrong. How fickle are Hoosier fans?

Here are some of the rumors I’ve seen regarding the controversy:

Bobby Knight doesn’t like Mike Davis (surprise!) – he conveniently speaks out right when he returns to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 11 years (remember – most of those years were with Indiana…the late 90s were far from perfect), and the media has taken the bait again. This is reminiscent of the Cheaney whipping or that “recruit” from some Eastern European country who was supposed to be better than anyone else on his team (Viktor Perokov? Is that right?). Everyone is buying into this hook, line, and sinker! Isn’t it only natural to say you should have fired the guy who replaced you before you got fired? Pretty convenient, even if it’s classless. Sour grapes, my friend. Sour grapes.

Mark Cuban does like him! There have been all kinds of rumors that the owner of the Dallas Mavericks (an IU alum) had offered to buy out Davis’ contract. Apparently, that is not the case, since he has come out in support of Davis.

RTV 6, the ABC affiliate in Indianapolis, has reported that Davis is going to Tulane.

What’s fact? What’s fiction? I guess it will all pan out in the next few days – or even hours.

In related news, My ESPN bracket is doing really well. I’m in the 99.4 percentile, with three of my final four teams still in the hunt (thanks a lot, Oklahoma!). This is the best I’ve done by this point in the tournament — ever! Of course, my bracket is going down next week, since a lot of people are starting to pick Louisville. I wish they’d just stop with their prognosticating! They’re just jinxing me! They think they know what they’re talking about, and with every game it becomes more apparent that they really don’t know what they’re talking about.
