Small Group

I’m actually co-leading the small group (aka Community Groups, or something like that…they used to be called Flocks, but I keep forgetting what they’re supposed to be called now) tomorrow night. It’s been a while since I’ve led a group through a study. I’m looking forward to it. I’m thankful that the people with Sonlife are willing to allow people to grow into their positions. We’re going to start on The Attributes of God by A. W. Tozer. Should be some good conversation.

While we’re on the topic of small groups – I’ve got a bone to pick with a lot of them. Church leaders promote home Bible studies and fellowships as a little church within the larger church. As the church grows larger, the small groups are supposed to function more and more as the church to its members. The problem with a lot of them is that no one in some of these groups knows what the church is supposed to be! It seems like one of the first things these groups should do is talk about what its purpose is. That way, when something bad happens in someone’s life – and they will happen – members will have a network of support serving as the church, rather than being isolated and alone. It can be very easy to forget the need for showing what the church can be…especially within newer churches where the majority of people have no idea what the church is supposed to be. I understand that the Holy Spirit has a role in bringing the church together, but there is also a leadership issue that needs to be addressed in a lot of churches – both established and new ones.

Fortunately, I think the Sonlife leadership has a pretty good grasp on communicating and being what the church should be in these small groups.
