Can we please start showing kindness to local small businesses and their employees?

Since we’re talking about supporting local small businesses, can I ask you to do something, please? It’s pretty important. Please show some grace to these small business owners and their employees. In many cases, they aren’t the ones making the rules about wearing masks or social distancing or any of the other restrictions governments are enacting in order to attempt to stop the spread of this virus. It doesn’t really matter if they agree with the orders or not. They have to follow them.

So it doesn’t do you or them any good to complain about the restrictions they have to follow. If you really have a problem with these restrictions, take it to City Hall (or the State House or any other seat of government). Don’t take it out on the workers who can’t do anything about the restrictions if they wanted to.

An example from a local small business

Unfortunately, some people think it’s acceptable to berate the employees for something they have no control over. It’s gotten so bad in our area that some dining establishments have felt it necessary to publish announcements like this:

A recent Facebook post from one of our local small businesses.

It’s pretty ridiculous that it’s come to this. They had to announce (again) that abusing their staff because of the mask mandate. That’s crazy. And they’re not the only ones dealing with rude behavior. Mashcraft in Greenwood actually had to close their doors because someone started threatening the employees because he didn’t want to wear a mask.

Come on, y’all. Wear a daggum mask. Support local businesses. Show some grace. Don’t be a jerk. They didn’t ask for this. And if the mask mandate bothers you that much, take it up with the government, not the backbone of our economy. They’re already under enough stress. And we’re all in this together. Right? That’s what we’ve been saying all along, anyway.

OK. I’ve got that off my chest. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
