Baseball thoughts

Aiden’s baseball team finally got their first win Friday night. They’ve been so close so many times. They did manage to tie a team once. Just one bad inning would usually do them in. Due to rain, we only had one practice before the season began. You can definitely see an improvement in the kids’ play now that they’re on the field regularly.

Here are a few thoughts and observations from Friday’s ground-breaking win…

  • Every player got a hit this game. I’m pretty sure this is the first game where everyone got on base.
  • As I’ve mentioned before, I get excited when the kids succeed. I really want to see every kid get a hit. Shoot, I’m even a little disappointed when the opposing team’s kids strike out. So when the kids who usually don’t hit the ball got on base, I went nuts. I might be the most out-of-control first base coach in history. I just get so happy for these guys.
  • One of the boys had only gotten a few hits this season. And I think he would wind up stranded on base every time he got a hit. Friday night, he made it Home and stood on Home Plate! I think he thought he had to stay put (like you have to on 2nd and 3rd) or he’d get tagged out. He almost got plowed over by the runner that was behind him.
  • A dad mentioned to me that Aiden’s swing looks very familiar. He suggested if you put him in some pinstripe pants, he’d look just like Joe DiMaggio. I stopped being a Yankees fan after Don Mattingly retired, but that’s still a pretty big compliment.
  • Another kid who’d been in a slump over the past few games was apparently told by his dad that he’d pay him for every time he got on base this last game. After his second single, he looked up at me, smiled, and said, “I just got two dollars!”
  • The kids really looked like a baseball team on Friday. They were making great catches, covering the bases like they’re supposed to, and they made some pretty phenomenal throws. The playoffs start soon. Maybe we’re peaking at the right time.
