Happy New Year! Be sure to party like a Guitar Hero…
(sorry – I just can’t get enough of this video…“Yeeeeaaaahhh!!”)
New Year’s Eve has a special place in my heart. It always makes me think of Grandmama and Grandpa. I don’t know how many years we did it, but in my memory, it’s something we always did. At some point when we were young, my brother and I began going over to their house on New Year’s Eve. Our plan was always to ‘boogie woogie all night.’ And it was my stated goal every year to stay awake long enough to watch the world-famous ball drop. I remember when I finally stayed up long enough to see it and Grandpa had fallen asleep on the red-carpeted floor (as he was prone to do when we spent the night with them…I can still hear him snoring). I tried to wake him up (and probably my brother) for the countdown, but it was fruitless. So Grandmama and I counted down the advent of a new year together. I have no idea what year that was, but I definitely remember the night I was finally able to watch the ball drop.
I also remember Grandpa fixing a big breakfast New Year’s morning and family getting together to eat (again – maybe this only happened a few times, but in my mind it was an annual event…please correct me if I’m wrong). Although Grandmama and Grandpa are gone, I think this tradition continues to live on in its own special way. For the last few years, every time we get together at my parents’ house with Kevin & Liz (and now Caed, too!!), Dad fixes a huge breakfast for one of our meals. It’s one of the things we all look forward to every time we’re together. There’s definitely something special about sharing a meal with people you care about.

i spent many a new year with my grandma. we’d make air popped pop corn and DROWN it in butter and salt, break out the chocolate bars and milk and go nuts. at midnight, we’d go outside with a big ol’ pot and ladle and bang on the pan screaming, “happy new year” until someone came outside and returned the favor.
danni and i did this last night!
*raises glass* here’s to traditions that live on and on
Traditions..
I can’t wait to hear someday what memories Aiden, Alyson, and Caedmon have. I do hope that they always remember the DanTodd eggs and breakfast. It is definitely a tradition that I love. Honestly, my favorite tradition might be roaming through a house with two grandparents, 4 grown kids, 3 niece/nephews, and 2-3 dogs. Just the time together is great. I can’t figure another time that I might quick-share a bathroom with my brother in law or hang out in my pajamas with so many other people!! 🙂 And, of course, getting out with Christy is always a highlight for me.
I am making a really long comment here..
Anyway, I have tons of holiday “tradition” memories from when I was a kid and I always wonder how many times these things really happened.. it doesn’t matter, though–they are just great memories that live on. I hope that we are making a few with Aiden and Alyson along the way.

Re: Traditions..
Does Kevin remember anything about New Year’s Eve at Grandmama’s and Grandpa’s? I wonder if we have any of the same memories.
Re: Traditions..
I agree. The time together is great. I wish we did it more often – or we could stay together longer when we do get together!
