MattDanTodd Land’s Best of…New (to us) Restaurants of 2006
Amazingly enough, we managed to try a few new restaurants this year – going to Charleston in the Summer really helped make that happen. Many of them were good. Five stood out as very memorable – either because of the food, the atmosphere, or both. Without further delay,
5. Fatz Cafe – Elizabethton, Tennessee
It’s a regional chain, but there’s some fine Lowcountry food here. It’s pretty affordable, too! Christy’s favorite is the shrimp and grits. And we don’t even like grits!
4. Chocolate Fetish – Asheville, North Carolina
I don’t know if a chocolatier really counts as a restaurant, but it was definitely a memorable place! We visited Chocolate Fetish when we went to the Mercy Me/Audio Adrenaline concert. The ladies behind the counter were very passionate about their chocolate, and would describe what each piece should taste like in vivid detail. The chocolates were not cheap, but they were well worth it!
3. Charleston Crab House – Charleston, South Carolina
Christy and I both agree – best seafood we’ve ever had! No question about it.
2. Bowens Island – James Island, South Carolina
A local favorite. The atmosphere is what makes Bowens Island such a phenomenal place. It’s the epitome of a local dive. Once you finally find the place, you walk into a dimly lit building with a Happy Days-style jukebox, handwritten messages all over the wall, and a wall of TVs. The fish is good. Shrimp was even better. The “hush up dogs” (as Aly liked to call them) were big and tasty. Apparently, the place is well-known for its oysters, but neither one of us eats oyster so we just took everyone else’s word for it. A trip to Bowens Island is truly a life-changing experience!
1. The Tavern – Abingdon, Virginia
Continental cuisine in a centuries-old building. Thanks to the generosity of our church small group, we were able to spend our anniversary in style. Best filet mignon I’ve ever had. The lamb was very tasty and the desserts were to die for! It was a once-in-a-lifetime meal!
