Much ado about nothing
“Hello, molehill. This is ESPN. You’re a mountain.”
I’ve seen coaches do far worse to their players and sports networks don’t try to generate controversy out of those coaches. This is one time I’ll side with the Bobby Knight defenders.
Knight has committed his share of memorable and boneheaded actions, causing people to watch his every move. Kicking his son was a bigger deal than this.
The one IU game we went to (IU vs. UTEP, circa 1989), Knight knocked his knuckles on Bomba’s head and told him to “Think.” No media controversy then. I don’t even think there was a peep. That’s much worse than firmly grabbing a player’s chin and telling him to “Look at me.”
Yes, he was rough. Didn’t cross the line, though.
I’m not a Knight apologist. If you’ve read MattDanTodd Land long enough, you’ll know that I supported Mike Davis…I might have been the last one in my family to give up on him. I think they kept Knight at IU far too long. I thought Brand handled the Knight firing completely wrong, but I was ready for Knight to move on.
With that being said, this “event” is such a non-issue that I’m surprised I’m even writing about it. Maybe I shouldn’t. Guess I’m playing right into ESPN’s hands.
Maybe I’m a sucker.
I do know that this is not nearly the big deal some are making it out to be. Knight might eventually have his “Woody Hayes moment”, but this definitely isn’t it.
By the way – IU plays Butler tonight. Go Hoosiers!
