Happy New Year!

We spent the night at my brother’s house last night. We had a great time ringing in the new year and saying goodbye to 2005 (it was none too soon for many people I know…here’s hoping for a much better ’06).

Christy and I slept on the floor in the living room downstairs. At about 2 in the morning, someone rang the doorbell and tried to come in the front door. Once I woke up and realized what was going on, I tried to look out the door through a peep-hole or front window. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing in their home! So, I stood at the front door and listened for what seemed like an eternity.

I was fairly certain that no one was out there, since the doorbell didn’t ring again. So, I wanted to go outside and check our car. Christy didn’t want me to do it. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep until I knew there wasn’t anyone trying to get into the house. So, I grabbed the cell phone and had it ready to dial 911 at the touch of a button. I had Christy stand at the front door with part of a flagpole. I told her to whack anyone who tried to come in.

All was clear. Nothing was damaged. I’m sure it was some drunk either trying to get into another party, or trying to stumble his/her way back home. I had seen some car lights when I looked out the rear window (yes, they have rear windows, but none in the front…I know…I know…It’s Noblesville, though!). So, I’m assuming they figured out they were in the wrong place after they rang the doorbell.

I was on adrenaline for the next hour or two. Every time I’d get close to sleep, I’d have some wild situation pop into my head and I’d have to check the doors, or check on the kids upstairs. Yet another non-restful sleep on New Year’s! Happy 2006!

Here are some thoughts/observations from last night’s events:

* Is it disrespectful of the flag if you impale someone on said flag’s pole while said flag is still attached?

* It’s amazing that the dogs didn’t bark and Kevin and Liz didn’t hear the doorbell. Some guard dogs Jenga and Diego turned out to be! They bark at everything else under the sun – why not when it mattered?

* Lock your doors!!! You never know who might wander into your home.
