Aiden & Basketball
Aiden had his first basketball game today. He played all of the second half. He grabbed one rebound, got a quasi-assist, and would have had another rebound if he and his teammate didn’t battle for the ball. He’s learning more every time he’s on the court, and he’s having a blast!
His team, the Tar Heels, dominated the game. I think they’re the oldest team in the league (remember, Aiden is youngest by far), and it shows. Every time the other team got the ball, Aiden’s team would intercept a pass, dribble down, and pass it to the big guy. That’s how you win games, isn’t it? Feed the big guy down below. They wound up winning 22-4. It really wasn’t a game, and I started feeling sorry for the other team. Fortunately, they appeared to be happy just out there playing ball. They had a girl on their team who could handle the ball really well. She was probably the best ball handler on the court.
The refs were great. I think Aiden and his teammates learned more from them than they have from their coach. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining! I know it’s tough to get a group of 5-7 year-olds to do anything, it’s even more impossible to get them to pay attention to something like basketball rules and strategy.
I was a little surprised to find out that you have to pay to get in to every game. That was a little unexpected. I know it’s not unheard of, but it would have been nice to have known that before we got there. The lady in line in front of us had to dig through her purse to find enough change to get in and see her son play. If we had realized what she was doing, we would have paid her way, but I didn’t figure it out until it was our turn to pay.
I’m not planning on reporting Aiden’s stats from every game. I just wanted to bring it up for the first one. He had a blast!
To top off the day for him, we saw Chicken Little with the Browns. Good times. Good times.
