Dirty little secret…

OK, I’ll admit it. I’ve been mesmerized in by the hype and I have to say I actually enjoy the show. Yep, I’m a sucker. When I heard about it, I was skeptical, but now I might be the only person in America watching Rock Star: INXS. Actually, I don’t watch it all the time, because I can never figure out which day it’s on at which time and I miss most of the show.

While I’ve enjoyed INXS, I’ve never really been what you’d call a fan of the band. Their search for a lead singer, however, has caught my interest. Not because I am really that interested in INXS, but because these contestants have talent! The production value is lacking – sometimes I feel like I’m watching New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, or something staged like that, but the performance level is unmatched. It’s much better than American Karaoke. I watched Idol the first year and enjoyed it. The second year, it felt too much like a bunch of lounge singers – no style or variation, even when the producers tryed to force them to pick different styled songs every week. I’ve tried to get into it since then, but just can’t do it.

That’s where Rock Star takes the concept to an entirely new level. The contestants are singing with a live band and they are actually encouraged to display their talents outside of mere vocals. It’s really quite entertaining, in spite of the awkward presence of the hosts.

At first, I was impressed by JD Fortune’s (yes, it’s a corny rock star name, isn’t it?) ability to bring down the house, but his act has become tired. Jordis, however, has impressed me from the beginning and keeps on knocking my socks off every time she performs. I don’t know if I’d put her with INXS, but she definitely has some talent that is worthy of being signed.

I wonder what they’ll try to do for an encore, if any. I mean, INXS isn’t going to be looking for another lead singer next year. Are they going to find another band whose singer committed suicide and find them a replacement? Nirvana would be the next candidate, then – right?

Doubtful.
