Read any good books lately?
I’m looking for a good book or two to read. I’d prefer fiction. It can be historical. As long as it is narrative. I’ve been reading all kinds of books recently, but none of them have really told a story. I need to read a good story now and again. I’ve been listening to The Man Who Flew the Memphis Belle in its audiobook form. It’s been a very interesting story to hear. And unless I’m mistaken, the last work of fiction that I read was Red Storm Rising – and that was nearly two years ago. It’s time to get into some good stories.
I’ve noticed I’m much more comfortable using a narrative style when I preach. If that’s the case, I really should be reading more stories, don’t you think? One way to become a better storyteller is to listen and/or read other great storytellers. And I have the privilege of telling the greatest story ever told every week! It only makes sense that I should continue to sharpen that area.
So – read any good books lately? What do you recommend?

Gillian Bradshaw
Though her stories aren’t narratives unfortunately, Gillian Bradshaw’s books are beautifully written historical fiction novels. I happened to pick up some of her books while doing book reports for my history class and to my surprise I was actually more thrilled then overwhelmed when I read them. Most of them are generally set in ancient civilizations such as the Roman Empire, Greece, Egypt, etc. She writes with amazing historical accuracy and yet the language is not so distant that modern day readers can get into the action. Her stories don’t blow you away, rather they suck you in and you can’t escape until the very last page. Even though they were long, I was never bored by them. A few I recommend by her are:
-The Sand-Reckoner
-Render Unto Caesar
Warning: Her books go into a lot of historical depth and make lot’s of references so you may need to do a tiny bit of research to sort of set yourself for the time frame. Also these are no kid friendly books so not for the sensitive types. (LOL)
Thanks!
I looked at her stuff on Amazon.com. Sounds pretty interesting. I’ll definitely have to check her out!
Thanks!
