I’ve known Laurie since around 6th or 7th grade. We were in many of the same classes throughout middle school and high school. We had similar groups of friends. She eventually wound up marrying a friend of mine who was part of the group that went on that life-altering trip to Tennessee’s Fair Eastern Mountains. She was even there to show support when mom died.
Laurie has loved Star Wars for as long as she can remember.
Oh. And she’s taught high school English for more than two decades.

With Star Wars Day being on May 4 (May the Fourth be with you!) and what I like to call Orthodox Star Wars Day on May 25 (the anniversary of the release of A New Hope), I’ve decided to dedicate this whole month to talking about Star Wars with some of the biggest Star Wars fans I’ve known throughout the years. In this series of conversations, I asked everyone the same questions. Things like, “Which episode is your favorite?” and “Who’s your favorite character?” and let the Sabacc cards fall where they may. I had a lot of fun recording these episodes. I hope you have just as much fun listening to them!

What’s with the crazy episode title?
I probably should have just called this episode “Talking About Star Wars with an English Teacher” or something like that. But no, I have to be different.
When Luke is cleaning Threepio and Artoo while they’re in his homestead’s garage (I guess that’s what you’d call it?) on Tatooine, Threepio says he isn’t sure where he is. Luke replies, “Well, if there’s a bright center of the universe, you’re on that planet that it’s farthest from,” basically saying that they’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, far from all the action.
Pretty ironic, since Tatooine seems to be where all the action happens in the prequels. It’s kind of central to the Skywalker saga. Everything seems to happen there. But I digress…
So we’re in the middle of the month of May – Star Wars Month – so it only seems fitting to me. I know it’s a super-obscure reference that no one but me will catch or understand. Thanks for humoring me, anyway.
