Tailgating in the age of COVID

The days are getting shorter. The leaves are starting to turn. It’s going to start getting chilly soon. Our thoughts have turned to pumpkin spice everything*, roasting marshmallows, and Mihret’s even plotting out her Halloween costume. All of these things make me love the fall. But there’s one thing to rule them all:

TAILGATING.

That’s right. It’s tailgating season. COVID-19 has thrown a wrench in so many things this year, but you can’t stop tailgating. Sure, we can’t gather in large groups and most stadiums have banned this hallowed tradition this year. But you can’t stop tailgating. There’s a chance your favorite football team might not even be playing this weekend. But you can’t stop tailgating. I think you get the idea.

You can’t stop tailgating.

We’re throwing all of the tailgating rules out the window this year. I mean, why not? We have our own middle school campus this year with an enrollment of one. We don’t have a football team on our campus, so why wait until the weekend?

We’re tailgating whenever we want. And you can’t stop us.

You can just call it lunch if you want, but you’d be wrong. We’re tailgating in our backyard.^ And we’re having a blast while doing it. We’re also having some great game day food. And we don’t even have to wait until game day. Why didn’t we think of this before?

Mac & Cheese Burger Slider with Fire and Flavor burger seasoning? Yes, please!

I’ve discovered a new collection of seasonings from the fine folks at Fire and Flavor. I bought one of their variety three-packs with burger, steak, and chicken seasonings. The perfect variety for what we like to grill.

Y’all.

I’ve only had these seasonings for about two weeks and I’ve already used the burger seasoning three different times. It’s so full of flavor that Mihret doesn’t even want to put ketchup or mayonnaise on these burgers. That’s a big deal. A big. stinking. deal.

A Cheeseburger Slider on Hawaiian bread is always a fan favorite.

The Fire and Flavor burger seasoning has quickly become my go-to seasoning for my burgers. I can’t wait to give their chicken and steak rubs a try. Looks like we’ll be tailgating for weeks on end. No need to wait for a football game at our house.

What’s your favorite tailgating food?

*Apple spice is better though. That’s right, I said it. Fight me.

^It should go without saying, but you never know if someone’s going to try to take things out of context, so I need to say it. No alcohol is consumed during tailgating that happens to take place during the workday. And Mihret’s drink choices are limited to water and milk and maybe the occasional juice.
