Yes. The teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker made me cry

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker teaser poster

Have you seen it yet? Sure you have. By now, everyone’s seen the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. But if you haven’t for some strange reason, you need to watch it. Now. Because we can’t have the conversation that follows without you watching it once. Or twice. Or a dozen. Just do it.

I’ll wait…

OK. Are we good? Go ahead and watch it again if you want. I won’t mind. I’ve probably watched it a dozen times or so already. Here are some of my initial thoughts. I’ll try not to speculate too much because…well…everyone else is already doing that. And we’ve all come up short when we’ve tried to extrapolate the whole film from just a 30 second teaser.

Before we go any further though, I feel like we need to make one thing clear: NO SPOILERS! This isn’t new. I won’t be pursuing any spoilers. I won’t be sharing any spoilers on this site. If you share spoilers in the comments, you’ll probably find yourself banned. They’re not welcome here. We’re only going to talk about what has officially been released, like the stuff in this trailer. So here goes…

  • I was fine. I really was. Until I saw Chewie and Lando in the Falcon. Then it hit me: This is the end of the road. They’ve gotten the band back together (kind of), and it’s been (mostly) amazing. But this is it. Han’s already gone. Luke, too. And even if they survive this episode (and they’d better survive this episode), this is the last film with Lando and Chewie and everyone else. Even though I haven’t been a fan of some parts of the Sequel Trilogy, the majority of this journey has been amazing. I’m sad to see it come to an end. A little tear started to form in the corner of my eye.
  • The medal from A New Hope. It could have been Han’s. It could have been Luke’s. I don’t know. I don’t care. Both are gone (although not fully gone, as Luke reminds us). And this tip to the Original Series? Maybe this really will be the fitting end to an amazing saga.
  • Then I saw General Leia. I was fully prepared to say farewell to Our Princess in The Last Jedi. I thought, “This is it,” when we saw her floating in space early in that film. Then she turned into Supergirl. So I know we’re going to have to deal with Carrie Fisher’s death in this final installment. We’ve always assumed Leia is going to die in this film. Maybe she won’t. I guess that doesn’t really matter at this point because I know when I saw her in the teaser, that tiny puddle that had gathered in the corner of my eye was running down my cheek. I confess that I was at work when I watched the trailer for the first time. I did my best to hold myself together. But I have to admit, it was a challenge.
  • I wiped the tears from my cheek in time to see the remnant of a destroyed Death Star. But which Death Star is it? I can see it being the first Death Star because Yavin 4 apparently had a strong remnant of a Sith presence and this could provide a nice bookend to the saga. But it’s probably more likely that it’s the second Death Star. The Aftermath books hint at a Vader Lives cult that trades Vader relics, including items that had to have been recovered from Endor. And it’s apparent that Kylo Ren, or someone connected with him, has been to Endor. How else would he have Darth Vader’s melted, mangled helmet? And with the Emperor’s cackle at the end – it sure sounds like we’ll be returning to the land of Ewoks.

I must say that I wasn’t all that excited about the title, The Rise of Skywalker, until I started thinking about the whole arc of the trilogy of trilogies in the Skywalker saga.

Revenge…

Return…

Rise

Certainly sounds like the Skywalker saga to me. Of course, using “rise” evokes another memory, too…

Episode III Teaser Trailer on Disney Video

Perhaps we’ll come full-circle and the entire Skywalker saga will be wrapped up in a nifty little bow at the end. I can’t wait to find out!

What were your thoughts about the trailer? Did any of it make you misty-eyed?
