7 lines I love to quote from Star Wars

One day not too long ago, while Aiden and I were driving home from some event, I had to make a quick stop at a store. Aiden didn’t want to go inside, so I told him he could stay in the car. Since he’s 14 years old, there wasn’t any danger of him getting too hot in the car. I left the car running because it was going to be a quick dash in and out of the store. That way, he could stay cool with the air conditioner on and he could listen to whatever tunes he wanted to hear. I could get in and out without having to wait on him. It was a win-win proposition.

As I stepped out of the car, I turned to Aiden and said one of the lines from Star Wars that I love to quote:

“Lock the door. And hope they don’t have blasters.”

In case you’re unfamiliar with that quote, it’s Luke and Han’s response to C-3PO when he asks what the droids should do if they’re discovered in the Death Star. But you already knew that. Right? Of course you did. If not, I highly recommend watching A New Hope again. After all, it’s my favorite movie. It should be yours, too. Unless The Empire Strikes Back is your favorite. Or Return of the Jedi. Those are great choices, too.

I realized as I walked away from the car that I use that line a lot. In fact, I find myself saying this almost every time I ask one of the kids to lock a door. Then I realized that I use several lines from Star Wars in everyday conversation on a regular basis.

So here they are, in no particular order. Seven lines I love to quote from Star Wars.

7 lines I love to quote from Star Wars

I. “Who’s the more foolish; the fool or the fool who follows him?” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Pretty good question, right? Han called Old Ben a fool, even though he was doing what the Jedi Master had instructed while they were in the depths of the Death Star.

It’s a good question for us today, isn’t it? It’s especially true when discussing American politics. And you know I’m talking about your political party.

II. “Great, kid! Don’t get cocky!” – Han Solo

The person I say this to the most?

Myself.

Gotta keep things in perspective. Gotta remain humble. Even when I’m feeling on top of the world, it’s important to have the right attitude. Can I be confident? Yes. Can I live with assurance? Of course. Can I be proud of what I’ve accomplished? That’s expected.

But cocky? No. That’s not good.

III. “Let the Wookiee win.” – C-3PO

Let the Wookiee Win

Nobody wants their arms ripped out of their sockets. Right?

It’s a good strategy for life. Just let the Wookiee win.

IV. “You’re going to find many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

I don’t necessarily agree 100% with Obi-Wan’s statement. I believe there are some absolute truths that do not change, regardless of our point of view. That being said, the way we think of the world and what’s happening around us is shaped by our own experiences, histories, and personal journeys. We carry all of that with us. It can blur our perspective of some things. It can sharpen the way we see other things. It’s like a lens that impacts how we view the world.

V. “Impressive. MOST impressive.” – Darth Vader

There’s nothing like complimenting someone the way Darth Vader does.

You gotta say it like he does, though. The emphasis has to be on the “most”.

VI. “It’s a trap!” – Admiral Ackbar

There are forces working against us that want to see us fail. Don’t let them succeed. Don’t fall into the trap.

VII. “Nooo!” – Luke Skywalker

OK.

Not really. I kind of lied about this one.

VII (redux). “Nooo!” – Darth Vader

I lied.

Again.

But you can’t have just one Skywalker shouting “Noooo!” It has to be a whole family affair, I guess.

I must confess, though. I do like using the Nooooooo! button.

Here’s the real #7:

VII (for real this time). “That’s no moon.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

This quote works in a variety of settings. You can let your imagination run wild and you’ll probably come up with an appropriate use for this quote. It’s just that useful.

What’s your favorite?

And there they are. Seven quotes from Star Wars that I use as often as I can. I highly recommend you do the same. Sprinkle them liberally throughout your conversations. You’ll have one of two reactions. Either someone’s eyes will light up and get the reference, or they’ll look at you like you fell out of the sky and landed on your head. Either way, it’s probably worth it.

You know,it’s funny. The Star Wars scripts aren’t necessarily known for their great dialogue. Some of it feels pretty…wooden. This is especially evident in the Prequels. Did you notice how none of the seven quotes I listed were from Episodes I-III? Yeah. There’s a reason for that.

George Lucas has never been accused of being this generation’s Shakespeare. In spite of this, he did manage to include some pretty memorable quotes in these films. I could have probably included seven more lines from the Original Trilogy that I like to use, but figured seven was a nice magic number to share.

What’s your favorite line from Star Wars? Do you use it in regular, everyday conversations? Which phrases should I add to my personal lexicon?
