2009 Ralphies – a little late
Yeah, so…it’s the middle of February and I’m just now posting my annual Ralphie Awards from 2009. Sue me.
Then again, I take that back. Someone might actually try to do that. 😉
Don’t remember what the Ralphies are? Here’s last year’s list.
Best Movie
Star Trek. I know some die-hards didn’t like it and thought it spit on their shared history. But I did.
Close second:Â Iron Man. I know. I’m a year late. But I didn’t get to watch this until 2009. So it counts. I did finally get to see Dark Knight, but Iron Man was more fun for me to watch. And movies are still supposed to help us escape. And that’s what I did when I saw Iron Man.
Best Record
David Crowder Band, Remedy Club Tour. Love this album. Even the key-tar.
Best Song
Steven Curtis Chapman, Heaven is the Place. I love this song. I hate this song. Well, hate is probably too strong of a word. But it messes me up every time I hear it. So raw. So powerful. So hopeful in the midst of tragedy.
Best Book (Fiction)
I think I only read one work of fiction and it was one a friend loaned me for the flight to Ethiopia. So, by default I guess, the award goes to John Grisham, The Associate.
Best Book (Nonfiction)
Melissa Fay Greene, There is No Me Without You. An absolute must-read for anyone connected to Ethiopia in any way. I was saddened to learn that the book’s heroine, Haregewoin Teferra, died shortly after I finished reading the book.
Best TV Show
History Channel’s Pawn Stars. The Old Man just cracks me up.
Close second? Food Network’s Best Thing I Ever Ate. Who woulda thunk listening to chefs talk about their favorite dishes could be so engaging. It’s not Ham on the Street, but it’s still pretty good.
So…what are your favorites from 2009?

I still have Star Trek in the plastic wrap in the DVD cabinet. I FINALLY found someone who has watched it to let me know how it was. It was one of the ones Columbia House sends and charges u for without asking.. I guess I’ll have to check it out. Iron Man is Jacobs ABSOLUTE favorite, he is waiting the release of Iron Man 2…
I am a HUGE fan of any James Patterson books he would be my author pick for the entire year, finding it hard to pick just one. Mom LOVES Grisham, she has read just about all of his.. This is a good list you have. Thanks to you I found Steven Curtis Chapman this year and there are many of his songs I have grown to like. I got the WOW 2009 CD, its a 2 disc set and I give it two thumbs up 🙂
Have you heard his new one, Beauty Will Rise? I have an extra copy if you want it.
I would love to hear it 🙂 … Also I was going to tell you, I started watching Pawn Stars too, one night you posted on the funny old man so I checked it out. I watch it all the time now…lol. Jake and I love to watch American Pickers and Food Tech on the History channel too!! Have you seen those yet, Im pretty sure they are fairly new.
Glad there’s another Pawn Star convert. 😉 I’ve seen American Pickers, haven’t gotten into it nearly as much as Pawn Stars. Haven’t seen Food Tech yet. I’ll have to check it out.
I’ll bring it over to you either today or tomorrow. If you like it, feel free to keep it. I do feel like I should warn you, though, it’s intensely raw and emotional.
