Diego
About a year ago, I mentioned how Diego’s health was deteriorating and we didn’t expect him to live much longer.
Today became the dreaded day. The medicines had lost their effectiveness and it was obvious that Diego was constantly in pain or uncomfortable. He was easily irritable and tried to avoid being around the kids for fear they would hurt him.
It’s a sad day in the Todd household. We’re all going to miss Don Diego Velazquez Todd. When we got him (before Aiden was born), his tiny tail looked like a paintbrush with white paint on the tip. That led us to thumb through our Humanities books to find a fitting artist to be his namesake. Since we went on our honeymoon in San Diego, it only seemed fitting to name him after Diego Velazquez.
Bella seems to be quite concerned and confused. She knows we left with him this afternoon. But now she’s wandering the house like she’s looking for something and whining to go outside (even when she doesn’t have to).
He was such a good dog, even in his times of obvious pain. We’re gonna miss him.

My favorite Diego memory was scratching his belly during small group. He let you be lazy and stood still while your extended foot scratched the underside of his belly. He would stand for 20-25 minutes, content to let you scratch away.
He’ll be missed.
Yeah, he was pretty good at “letting” you scratch his belly with your feet, wasn’t he?
Whether you wanted to do it or not was a different story. But he didn’t really care. You were going to scratch his belly regardless of your own personal desires.
My favorite Diego memory is the day that we came over to meet him. He was just a puppy and he was running across the couches all hyper and happy. He was so wild that day. We loved him. We will miss Diego.
He had so much difficulty walking for such a long time that I’d kind of forgotten how bouncy and playful he was. That’s a great memory to have!
Of course, there is one memory that will live on permanently about Diego…the way he flashed his teeth in warning to Jenga. He was so annoyed by Jenga and Jenga was so oblivious. It always reminded me of Kevin and I. (I being Jenga.)
Yeah – I’ve seen Kevin flash his teeth at you a couple of times after you turned around. 😉
