Flashback Friday
During my Senior year in high school, our family took a vacation to historic Williamsburg, Virginia. As we approach this year’s Independence Day celebration, I can’t help but think back to that visit. Here are some things I remember:
- The trial re-enactment where Dad served on the Jury because he was a white, male, landowner. Of course, that’s not the most memorable part of that event. The most memorable was when they made the announcement at the beginning of the trial that the big wooden doors, which were the only way in or out of the building, could only open into the building (not out, as is common in modern buildings). In the event of a fire, we would have to wait for the doors to open before running for our lives out of the building (in an orderly fashion). Not exactly the most comforting thing you want to hear as they slam the doors shut.
- Passing by the campus of William & Mary. Didn’t really look very much because it wasn’t a college I was considering. And besides, I already knew I was going to Milligan. In fact, I was so confident that Milligan was the only school I sent an application. Good thing they accepted me or I’d have had some serious egg on my face.
- Searching all over the place for a wedge of cheese and a loaf of bread. For some reason, Kevin and I thought that was the coolest thing ever to be looking for bread and cheese. Teenagers…
- Speaking of teenagers, my favorite picture from the trip is the one at the top of this post. Kevin and I decided to pose for this picture. Something tells me this was a fulfillment of my parents’ dreams as they were raising two teenage boys.
It wouldn’t be the Fourth of July weekend without listening to some John (Cougar) Mellencamp.
