Star Wars: Retold (By Someone Who Hasn’t Seen It)

Although it’s almost impossible for me to imagine, there are still people in this country who have never watched the Star Wars trilogy. In fact, if I remember correctly, one of my friends in Tennessee hasn’t seen Star Wars yet. And Tim, if you read this, I think you’d better reconsider that whole ‘getting married’ thing until she watches them.

The Star Wars saga has become such a part of the cultural lexicon that it could be assumed that you already know the details of the movie without actually seeing it. Just like you already know the ending of Titanic without watching it (you know…the boat sinks) and you know what happens in Pearl Harbor (you know…there’s a sneak attack), I would have assumed everyone knows the story (including the ‘surprises’) in the Star Wars trilogy. It’s kinda like The Sixth Sense. I didn’t watch the movie until a few months ago. But I already knew the big shocker in the movie before ever watching it. It’s become part of our cultural language; our shared story. Dare I say, our collective mythology?

In the same way, I’d assume that people know the big revelations, as well as the basic premise to the Star Wars saga. I mean, doesn’t everyone know who Leia’s brother is? Doesn’t everyone know which character is Luke’s father? Apparently not.
