Kyle Taber!
I love hearing the crowd chant, “Kyle Taber!” at IU games. I don’t remember if they did it last night, but I know they’ve done it in the past.
He’s a good friend of one of my cousins, and I’ve tried to follow his career at IU the last few years. Of course, up until this year, his career has involved riding the pine – and that doesn’t show up on most box scores. I love the story of Taber because he started as a walk-on with the team. When this season began he was offered a scholarship. An now he has started a few games and made some key plays in big games. Like Errek Suhr in previous years, he’s the embodiment of what IU basketball is all about – a hard worker who might not be as talented as other guys, but plays his heart out because he loves the game and he loves the program. And he’s an Evansville kid. What more could a guy from Southwestern Indiana ask for?
Christy thinks I’m nuts cheering for a guy that I don’t even know. But he’s such a great story. It’s easy to cheer for him. That’s why it makes me happy to hear the student section chant his name. The picture above is right after he dunked on Purdue last night.
