A PERFECT ending!
Hmmmm…maybe someone spoke a little too soon (yes, it’s really on Amazon – but for how long, since it’s ‘merely a placeholder’?).
At least they don’t have a deadline to worry about now. Maybe they could save the title for next year.
I tried really hard to root for the Patriots. I mean, they talk a good game. They say it’s all about ‘team’ and what red-blooded American sports fan doesn’t want to root for a team more than an individual? And most of the guys on the team seem to be pretty decent human beings, as far as I can tell. They certainly don’t have the reputation that some organizations in the league have (or a certain NBA team is beginning to earn).
But then I’d think about their coach and how he really seems to present himself as the anti-Dungy. He couldn’t even stick around to watch the end of the game? Even at the end, the moment somehow becomes about him. We certainly have a class act here, that’s for sure. I certainly hope the Pats fans are proud of their coach.
Then there was the whole Spygate debacle, which continues to rear its ugly head. I understand that the loss of a 1st-round draft pick is a pretty severe penalty, but that had no repercussions on this year. While I don’t think they should have been banned from the post-season, I certainly think they should have been penalized for cheating this season. Rather than do something like make them forfeit the game against the Jets, the NFL merely swept it under the rug and allowed the Pats to continue their incredible run towards ‘perfection.’ While the thought of witnessing an event that only happens once in a generation (if that frequently) was appealing, the idea of celebrating such a tarnished ‘perfect’ season was not a pleasant one.
And then there’s the fans. Don’t get me started on them. One of my best friends in elementary school was a Patriots fan. It was fun watching him get so worked up over his team. But he was never obnoxious (and as far as I know, he still isn’t). But in my experience, he’s the exception. The majority of Pats fans I’ve run into have been so annoying and full of themselves that it almost makes me want to write off the entire region. It’s a very similar feeling that I have about the whole state of Kentucky after having been surrounded by Wildcats fans for almost a year. So, just like I would never ever cheer for Kentucky to win anything (primarily because of the fans I’ve encountered), I also find it almost as difficult to ever cheer for the Patriots to win. Ever.
The end of that game is how every Super Bowl should end (unless the Colts are playing – then I hope they blow out their opponent). And what made the whole thing even sweeter was that the Patriots lost in another comeback to another Manning.
And to think I wasn’t even that excited about watching this year’s Super Bowl.
**UPDATE** The book is no longer available on Amazon. And that’s just a plain ol’ shame, isn’t it?
