It has begun

I’ve both looked forward and dreaded this day at the same time. Aiden is now a Cub Scout. They tried to guilt me into serving as his Den Leader this year. With all of the other new responsibilities I have, I figured it would be too much to take that on this year. I did say I’d serve as an assistant (as did half the other dads).

Back when we were part of Sonlife/Southside/Summit, I got to know Blair pretty well. I think when I met him he was still a recruiter for the Scouting District in that area. We talked Scouting one day and he said that some people have it written all over them that they’re a prime candidate to recruit to be an adult volunteer. And he said I had that aura about me.

“Oh,” I said, “we have a big ol’ L for ‘Loser’ engraved on our foreheads, do we?”

“Something like that,” he laughed.

Notice he didn’t deny said charge. Since Scouting was such a big part of my life I’m sure that if Aiden continues that I’ll step into a larger leadership position. I’ve always been scared that I’m going to somehow pressure him into staying in Scouting when he really doesn’t want to. The last thing I want is for him to hate Scouting. Of course, I’d also love to see him someday achieve Eagle. But that’s a long way off. First we have to make it through Tiger Cubs.
