Can I help you, officer?

This morning was See You at the Pole around the country. The national time was established as being at 7 a.m. That’s more than an hour before school starts and it was still dark at 7. That being said, I still drove to the schools to see if anyone was outside praying. We were having our own separate See You at the Pole-type prayer gathering at 7:30 for all interested and concerned adults at the church flagpole. So I didn’t stick around at the schools too long because I didn’t want to be late to the church prayer gathering.
When I got home, I realized I needed to take out the trash. When I came back outside with the trash bags, there were two Sheriff’s cars outside the church building. I walked over to see what was going on and one of the cops said, “Do you know who the Pastor is here?”
“Uh, yeah. That would be me,” I said. Trying very hard not to freak out. What had happened? Was all of our stuff stolen? Was the building trashed?
The Sheriff continued, “I was driving by and noticed the back door was wide open. Is anyone supposed to be here this time of day?”
“No. I’m the only one who would be in there at this time.”
He, his dog, and another officer walked through the building to see what had happened. We had some pretty strong wind last night. We suspected that it somehow blew the door open. They wanted to check – just to make sure – which I appreciated.
As they were checking the building, people began showing up for our See You at the Pole gathering. “Wow,” some thought, “We’re getting some pretty big publicity if police officers are showing up to pray with us.”
Unfortunately, that was not the case.
Fortunately, they didn’t find anything suspicious – even after checking the mess that is my office. It appears that the door did manage to blow open sometime last night. It definitely filled my excitement quotient for the month.
Then we prayed.
I took the kids to school after that, and noticed a group of students gathered around the flagpole. Looks like they started at 7:30 instead of 7 – which makes sense to me.
