Here We Go Again!
Time for a quick aquarium update…
All of the dalmatian mollies died. I think the final count was 27. The momma fish got to them before I could really do anything about it. Eventually, the two dalmatian mollies died, too. Serves them right. Must be karma or something.
One of the platies died too. The water had probably gotten too toxic or something – there were 27 dead fish in there, after all. I’m sure something from that lingered.
Did a complete aquarium clean with water change. I know you’re not supposed to change all of the water at one time, but something had to be done before my algae eater and last platy died. They’re doing fine now.
Last week, we bought two “Mickey Mouse” platies and two ghost shrimp. The tank is much happier now and none of the fish are nearly as aggressive as the dalmatians were.
So, I was looking in the aquarium tonight, noticing how big the ghost shrimp had grown in just a week’s time. Then I saw it. It was a little speck that appeared to be moving wherever it wanted. I looked closer and realized my initial thoughts were correct. It was a baby fish!
I guess one of my male platies turned out to be female. I’ve only seen one baby so far. I might wait till tomorrow to decide what to do. If there are tons again, I could probably put them in Aiden’s tank for a few weeks. They’d outgrow it too quickly, though. If there’s only one, I can’t really do that because platies like schools of fish.
had offered to take some of the dalmatians for her classroom. Maybe she’s interested in some platies. Of course, Aiden has already decided to name the newborn fish “Jimmy.” He wants to name every fish Jimmy, though.
The Inlaw is captivated by this tiny fishling. She hasn’t left the aquarium since we first saw them over a half an hour ago!

having had a 150 gallon tank (no lie) for most of my life, i know that when you’ve got babies, you’ve got a good tank goin’. i hope changing the water won’t mess things up.
sorry bout the deaths, but here’s hoping that the baby will survive and do well! congrats!
That’s HUGE!!
How many fish do you have?
How much room does a 150 gallon tank actually take up?
Dang….I can’t even imagine a tank that big.
it was built into the wall in the house i just sold (the one i grew up in). my dad built it in. when you walked into the house, in the entryway, it was along the wall, like a picture, about 5’by 3ish” and the rest of it was in the garage so you could feed and clean from the garage. it held a buttload of fish, usually fairly big ones. we kept it freshwater cause we were too lazy to take care of a salt water tank. it was rarely as full of fish as it could have been, but… it was still pretty cool. and i do remember babies being born quite a few times. …then getting eaten.
As long as they’ll live in a bowl, I’ll take them.
The end.
bowl
Do you have any fish already in your bowl?
Re: bowl
Nope. It’s SO lonely.
Re: bowl
If it survives till tomorrow night, we can talk about it at Community Group, I guess.
Have a great 3rd day of school tomorrow!
WOW.
what are you putting in that water to make it so fertile? that’s amazing.
Re: WOW.
Fish food.
And some alcohol. It gets the girl fish all tipsy and a little loose with their morals so they’re easier to breed.
What can I say? Our house is a happenin’ place.
Re: WOW.
just make sure you don’t give alcohol to YOUR girl – or she might get tipsy, and YOU KNOW – add to your family!
(by the way, apparently, that’s what K did to me – snuck in some liquor in a beverage of mine – because we’re also adding to our family – due in March!)
Re: WOW.
shoot. Didn’t realize this is Anon. This is SMM – just so you don’t wonder who the heck is expanding! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Sometimes I am such a dork.
Re: WOW.
Congratulations! You guys keep poppin’ them out, don’t ya?
