Philmont’s on fire
The fires are back at Philmont Scout Ranch this Summer. The South Country appears to be in danger. I read this post on a MySpace Philmont Group message board:
Bad in South Country, very close to Urraca as of last night, all trail camps in that area from Rayado River on are being evacuated to Staffed camps. Treks into south are all being diverted today. Fortunately no wind and a fairly cool night last night, which is good. However I was on the phone with Kansas Jack today when she cut me off with “I gotta go, another fire – at Ponil”
I was surprised when I was down a few weeks ago at how ridiculously dry it was.. this is going to be a rough one.. Ill try and get an update from Jack later on and let everyone know..
Ponil’s not South Country, so it sounds like the entire Ranch is a tinderbox. I might have to “adopt” one of my former camps this Summer. Sounds like they might need some extra encouragement.
I’ll put up a real post soon. I just can’t gather my thoughts together enough to type them out. Nothing major is going on right now except work for me and school for Christy. I was going to create a “Farmer’s Tan Watch,” chronicling the development of my farmer’s tan this summer, but the beach at Charleston kinda eliminated most of the white on my arms, so it wouldn’t have been as spectacular. I might keep a running tab of how many times a lawn mower breaks on me. That could get interesting…
