“Gospel of Judas”
OK – I’ve been reading some about the announcement that the long-lost Gospel of Judas has been discovered. This morning, I even watched one of the hosts on a national morning show try to have a theological discussion about the meaning behind this “Gospel.”
As expected, the media is falling all over itself for a book that was written in 180 AD, at the earliest. That’s 150 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection. They somehow want to portray these as authoritative, rather than the canonical versions that were all written much earlier than Judas. To paraphrase a quote I read today (on a completely different matter…although it had to do with Church history), it’s like us trying to write something authoritative today about the U.S. Civil War with no use of historical sources. The story is going to be skewed.
Ralph the Sacred River does a far better job of articulating how this is a great find, but it doesn’t discredit the Gospels as we know them – in spite of what some people want to say.
And in Wal Mart today, I saw a display for The Secret Supper. It’s obviously an attempt to capitalize on the Da Vinci hype.
Please – someone come up with a fresh idea for once!

Mollie at Get Religion has a good post about the mainstream media falling over itself about the “Gospel” of Judas.
The comments have turned into a debate about the truth of Christ’s message and the value of the Christian community throughout history. Many of them are not worth reading – but the article is definitely worth checking out!
