Basketball announcers
I’m watching the ACC championship with Aiden on ESPN. Dickie V was raving on and on (as he normally does) about Duke, when Aiden finally chuckled and said:
“Why does he have to talk so loud?”
I had to laugh. I can’t answer such a question because I wonder the same thing. See – certain people are even annoying to 5 year olds. Just wait till he gets a load of Billy Packer. Now there’s a guy who’s annoying.
I wish there was a “mute” button for the announcers. Why don’t these networks convene some type of forum or soemthing to figure out how to do that. It would be great to be able to watch these games without hearing:
“Slam, Jam, Bam, Baby!”
“He’s a Diaper Dandy!”
“It’s awesome, Baby!”
Or my favorite one I just heard a few minutes ago: “Call the fire chief! Call the fire chief! Call the fire chief! He’s burning down the nets!” (in other words, Reddick had a hot hand for about a minute).

Dickey V
I understand the annoyance; however, in my humble opinion, Coach Vitale was a key person in getting ESPN off and running some 20 years ago. His enthusiasm set him apart from the typical network announcers (or school-selected announcers). I remember some people watched just to hear what he would carry on about (similar to Howard Cosell, although with a much different style).
In the 1970’s and before, most folks only heard about nearby teams (or teams in nearby conferences) – and of course, UCLA. ESPN (boosted by Coach Vitale) changed the face of college basketball “fan-dom”. Shoot, I can laugh about it now, but I remember watching a late night ball game in the VERY early 80’s, and hearing about the “UConn Huskies”…. be aware, they did not post the score continuously in the corner – it was near half-time before I figured out that the team was NOT from somewhere in the Arctic north (as in “Yukon Huskies”…… say it out loud)….
I roll my eyes, too,…. but I enjoy the guy – I don’t think anyone studies the game any more than he does.
just one old guy’s opinion.
Go Hoosiers!
Re: Dickey V
Point well taken.
Of the announcers, Vitale is the least annoying – it’s just that he wears me down after a while. The fact that everyone else tries to copy his style and passion is more annoying than Vitale himself.
I still say Packer’s an idiot, though. 8{)}
Re: Dickey V
no argument here…. although, i’m sure he is laughing (crying?) all the way to the bank.
Somebody somewhere must think he is doing something right… personally, I would rather listen to the radio commentators.
