Happy Thanksgiving!

After a little confusion, our guests arrived for dinner today right on time. Seth and Windy understood Thanksgiving dinner to mean in the evening (which I would normally assume, too). Apparently, they didn’t get the memo that we were planning on eating at around noonish because Joanie had to be at work at 4. It all got straightened out and there was plenty of food to go around!

We tried following the advice of Alton Brown from Good Eats – which is a great show, by the way…even if you don’t like cooking shows. Imagine a cross between Emeril and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Anyway, he argued tooth and nail that soaking the turkey in brine is much better than basting the bird. Basting, he said, dries out the turkey and doesn’t really get into the meat. It has to do with osmosis, or something. So, I think he may have been right. I’ve never had a more moist turkey! Even the white meat was juicy. I think we’ll need to add some more spice to the brine next year, but they’re right – once you brine, there’s no turning back.

The rest of the dinner was just as tasty.
