Tornado

Yesterday morning, I had the luxury of sleeping in till 8:30. As I was walking out of our room, Christy came in and said, “Matt, could you call your mom? There was a tornado last night and I want to make sure she’s OK.”

I knew it’s an hour earlier there, so I didn’t want to wake her up. I decided to hold off calling her. Then, I looked at some of the online reports describing the devastation and the fact that it was at 2 in the morning. I ran to the phone and called her right away. Fortunately, she was already up. Dad had just called her (he was on business in Pittsburgh) – so that made me feel better about calling so early. She hadn’t been outside to check on any damage to their home, but I doubt there was much, if any. I don’t think she was in the actual path.

I haven’t heard anything about my Aunt and Uncle who live in Newburgh. No news is probably good news at this point, though. After all, they did have a power outage and the phone lines were probably in trouble, too.

Of course, with it being Newburgh, I was immediately concerned about the Crossroads facility and other people I know in the town (including the Busseys). Again – no news is good news though, right?

I couldn’t get off the Internet yesterday. I just kept looking at pictures from the devastation. I was in Indy when a major tornado came within about a mile of destroying our home. For some reason, seeing that destruction hasn’t bothered me as much as this has. Maybe it’s because I’m not there to see it firsthand. Maybe it’s because there’s so much more damage and loss of life (although the Greenwood Galyan’s was destroyed in the Indy tornado). Maybe it’s because my senior prom was at Ellis Park (I know, I know…horse park doesn’t really roll off the tongue for a prom location. Hey, it’s better than the 4-H).

Praying for those who lost everything…
