Community Group

We restarted our regular Community Group (aka Small Groups, aka “flocks” – even though we don’t use “flock” anymore, since it makes absolutely no sense to someone without a church background) meetings last night. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive. We haven’t had a meeting since the Jurgens returned to Colorado. Even though I am on record saying we need to get used to people leaving (because of the nature of our church – college students and sending members to plant churches in other areas – we’re always going to have people leave us…it’s a good thing), there’s still a hole in our group that won’t easily (or ever, really) be filled. I was worried that it would just be a little pity party because they’re gone.

On top of that, I realized yesterday that I have led youth small groups and co-led adult small groups. I’ve taught countless sessions, but I’ve never been the main leader of an adult small group. I suddenly felt a little intimidated – especially since Stan left some pretty big shoes to fill when he and his family moved.

It turned out to be a great meeting. We all opened up and prayed for each other. We’re on track with an exciting study about practicing the spiritual disciplines. There was even some serious ministry and encouragement going on after the “official” meeting was over. It’s amazing to see God work through His people on His own time – regardless of our human attempts at “programming” and “planning.”

What made it even better was the killer potluck! The desserts brought down the house!
