Candy Man
Yes, I am the candy man.
I started working at a food distribution warehouse this week. One hour after I accepted the job, I was offered a job at the bookstore. While I really wanted the bookstore job, I was only guaranteed 10-15 hours a week. The warehouse is a minimum of 20, maybe closer to 30. This gives us a more steady income as the support raising continues to grow.
When I turned down the bookstore position, I told the manager, “It pains me to turn down this job, but I’ve got to do it for my family.” She was very understanding and said she’d call back in a month to see if I would be interested in the position then. Maybe someday…
I’m the candy picker at the warehouse. There are definite advantages and disadvantages to this. It’s nice that I am working alone and don’t have someone hovering over me the entire time telling me if I’m doing something correctly. Of course, that means there’s little human interaction. I’m not sure how much I’m going to like that over the long haul.
I spend the evening (I go in at 4, and leave anywhere between 9 and midnight – Sunday thru Thursday) in a cooler, where it’s a nice 66 degrees, rather than in the non-air-conditioned warehouse where it feels like an oven. Can’t complain about that.
There is work involved. I’m getting a workout, which is probably a good thing. I can’t complain too much about the job, though. It’s not like it’s brain surgery or rocket science.
