A “Cutting Edge” sermon

In spite of all my efforts, I just could not manage to work a single Star Wars reference into my sermon this morning. Believe me, I tried. I really could have done something with the sword of the Spirit, but that would have been too much cheese! Besides, the story I told about using the sword didn’t need anything added to it.

I did manage to work in a Lord of the Rings reference, though. Hey – it was about the armor of God…what do you expect?

I have mentioned before that we have been considering moving to the Southside community in Johnson City in an attempt to be a bridge between our church and the surrounding neighborhoods. That is still a possibility. For the time being, though, we will be moving upstairs into a three-bedroom apartment. Actually, we’re in the middle of transitioning up to the apartment already. The beds are up there, most of the kitchen stuff is up there…even the TV and VCR. I just need to get some friends over to help move the really heavy stuff, like the washer and dryer! Hopefully, the two bedrooms will solve some of the sleep issues we’ve had in the past with the kids sharing a room. We’ve been up there two nights already, and it hasn’t worked as well as we’d hoped, but that’s because everyone (yes, all four of us) is sick, forcing us to lose sleep because of coughing and runny noses. The kids are excited to have their own rooms, so this will hopefully become a very good thing!

So…

Finals next week…

Got sick this week…

Began moving our stuff upstairs…

What was I thinking when I said I would preach today? Of course, I signed up for that several months ago. It all turned out good, though – even though I almost lost my voice during the sermon. Fortunately, we “shook things up” a bit and I never spoke for more than 10 minutes at a time, which gave my voice little breaks to rest. People seemed to be a little apprehensive at first with the fluidity of the service, but they really seemed to enjoy it by the time the service was over. I hope to be able to do something like it again soon.

Dale, who has just spent a year working with a church plant that birthed out of North Point in Atlanta said he really liked the structure of the service. He said it was “cutting edge.” I don’t know about that, but it was nice to get a good reaction.

I also discovered that seminary has rubbed off on me after only a year! I didn’t notice it as I created the manuscript (I can’t go from just an outline) that I had at least 3 references to things said during the school year this year. Not that I was considering dropping out of seminary, but it is nice to know that it is already paying off some in what I do and in how I preach!
