Memory Building…
This past weekend was a busy one in the life of our church:
*Community Group (that’s what we call our home Bible studies) on Friday night…more on that in a minute
*Church building work day Saturday morning – we made lots of progress with a work team of 25 people!
*Church picnic Saturday afternoon – the out of shape older guys beat the athletic-types in Ultimate Frisbee!
*More moving after Sunday’s service – helped move equipment for the Fitness Center. They’re relocating and they’ve been allowing us to meet in their facility rent-free for the past year. Can’t really pass up the opportunity to help.
Here’s what happened in the Community Group Friday night:
It was a Napoleon Dynamite theme – with Tater Tot Casserole and nachos (no quesadillas, unfortunately). Nancy was gracious enough to host, and we almost burned her apartment down! A potholder (with rubber in its material) somehow fell into the oven as we were heating up the tots.
Very calmly, Stan said, “I think there’s a little fire in the oven…” almost so quietly that it was tough to hear him. Steve opened the oven and tried to blow it out. Nancy then doused the flame with baking soda. It was more than a little fire! Everything happened so quickly that we didn’t even get people out of the kitchen before the fire was out. Nancy’s from Texas. Maybe she learned her quick draw in the wild west!
You never know what will happen in our Community Group!

Kitchen fires
I had the same thing happen once. I was cooking dinner with a friend and she left a washcloth in the oven- on the element. We were not quite as calm and collected as Nancy. Probably couldn’t have found the baking soda anyway. We all ran around in circles screaming for a minute. Then we threw it in the sink.
Re: Kitchen fires
That’s the first thing they teach you in fire safety: run around in circles screaming.
Good thing you didn’t run into each other as you tried to throw it into the sink. Then you would have had to run around some more!
