“When will I ever use this?”
When we learned geometry in high school, everyone asked if we would ever use any of the proofs and equations in real life. Many were convinced geometry was useless, unless you were going to be an engineer or a geometry teacher.
I was recently talking to a friend of mine from church about the deck he was building in his back yard. He said he had trouble getting it leveled off correctly, then a friend of his told him to use the Pythagorean Theorem to figure out the measurements.
The Pythagorean Theorem?
I guess you never know when you’re going to use the “useless” stuff in real life. I need to remember that as I begin to wonder if I’m ever going to use Greek in everyday ministry. I should also remember that when people ask me, “How is Greek going to help me in children’s ministry?” “Make sure you’re not too short-sighted,” I should tell them. After all, in an Intro. to Ministry test back in my Milligan days, I remember answering one question, saying, “I don’t plan on preaching, so I don’t really plan on using the lectionary.” The question had something to do with the definition of a lectionary and how you could apply it to your ministry. Now I’m preaching more, and might even be called to lead a church. Guess I was pretty short-sighted back then.
You never know…you just never know.
