What do you think of when you hear about Ethiopia? This is not a trick question.
When you say the word Indiana, I would wager that there are a few words that most Americans think of: corn, racecars, farming, basketball. Maybe the Colts and/or the Pacers. I’m sure there are other words that are commonly associated with my Hoosier homeland.
While I was in Addis, our guide asked us what Americans think of when they think of Ethiopia. I threw out some ideas, but I don’t really know how accurate they are. I know what I think of when I think of Ethiopia. But I guess I’m not your average American when it comes to this question.
So I ask you, oh Reader, this same question:
What do you think of when you hear of Ethiopia?
This is not a trick question. I would appreciate it if you’re as honest as possible. You will not be ridiculed (unless there’s hate speech involved. But I don’t expect that from any of you). I genuinely want to know. What comes to mind when you think of Ethiopia?

When I hear the word Ethiopia, I think of starvation. That is all.
That’s really not uncommon. Especially since they’re experiencing another famine.
I think of one of my top 10 favorite books…
The book: Cutting for Stone by Abram Verghese.
I think of the part where in Boston they try to find authentic cuisine, but the main thing making the food not ‘quite right’ is the fact that it’s hard to find butter created by cows living at 10,000 feet.
Oh my how I loved that book. 🙂
I’ve not heard of that book. I’m going to have to check it out ASAP!
