A Few Highlights From Our Virginia Vacation

After more than 1300 miles and 24 hours of travel, we’re back from our vacation and already counting down the days until we can return. Here’s a few highlights from our fabulous trip.

Our Cabin

Our cabin at Bluegreen's Shenandoah Crossing Resort

This was Christy’s Dream House. I guess this means the pink house in Charleston is now in second place.

S'mores in the fireplace at the Bluegreen Shenandoah Crossing ResortWith firewood delivered straight to our door every day, it was rather impossible not to have a fire. And you can’t have a fire without s’mores. Am I right?

Horses

Shenandoah Crossing isn’t just a resort. It’s also a working horse farm. Can you say “Heaven” for Aly?

Aly + Horse farm = HeavenOur daughters are polar opposites when it comes to horses. Whenever Aly was near the horse pasture, you could just see her relax. Her posture changes. Her face changes. Her voice changes. This is her “sweet spot.”

Mihret, on the other hand…

Mihret and a horse at Bluegreen's Shenandoah CrossingThis is the only way she’ll allow a horse to get close to her. She can’t hear it. Or let it touch anything other than her foot.

See? Polar opposites.

University of Virginia

We spent a day in Charlottesville, walking through the Historic Downtown Mall (which was really cool) , giving out-of-towners directions to the gay Pride Festival at a nearby park (not sure why they thought someone from Indiana knew where anything was in Charlottesville), and having a picnic lunch and a nice stroll through the campus of University of Virginia.

Aiden was most excited about checking out the football stadium. He was impressed. As I was walking with him during our tour, I jokingly said, “Who knows? Maybe you’ll wind up going to school here.”

“Yeah. I could go here. It’s funny that you said that. I was just thinking about how it might be nice to go here.”

Well…if he’s set on playing football in college, that rules Milligan out. I guess that means we’ll have to be OK with him going somewhere like UVa (even though he’s a big Virginia Tech fan thanks to his Bantam football team). But that’s still a few years off.

The Kids at the Rotunda at the University of VirginiaChristy thought this would be a cool place to take a picture of the kids. It’s adjacent to the Rotunda. The columned breezeway makes a pretty cool background. So we had to get a picture of ourselves, too. It’s nice to have kids that are old enough to be trusted with a camera.

While we were in Charlottesville, we met our dear friends, Mike and Angie, and their two little ones. We met them at a local apple orchard that’s on top of a mountain. With a name like Carter Mountain Orchard we really shouldn’t have been that surprised that it was on top of a mountain. But we were. I have to say that it was well worth the drive. The views were amazing. What an amazing place to spend time with such great friends!

The view from Carter Mountain OrchardViews like this remind me that I need to get out of Indiana more. Mountains still bring tears to my eyes.

I’m already ready to go back.
