A Mountain Did Move…

Buffalo Mountain - when God 'moved' it

Around 10 days ago, I asked you to join me in asking God to move a mountain.

Well, He did!

It wasn’t the mountain we were expecting, though. While Mihret did not begin drinking ridiculous amounts of fluids Friday morning, the doctors did present us with an option that did not require another trip to Riley.

Praise God!

We came home Tuesday afternoon with Mihret as the proud owner of an NG Tube. Doctors had not presented this as an option before because, after all, the whole reason we were in this mess was because of a tonsillectomy. There was understandable concern that her throat had not healed enough for this to be an option.

On Friday morning, the doctors up here consulted with doctors at Riley and all agreed that this was, indeed, a viable option. And it was much less dramatic than what was likely to happen if we went to Riley.

She’s doing remarkably well with the tube. She hardly even acknowledges that it’s there – unless it’s time to hook her up to the pump. Then she’s quite the little helper, putting the stethoscope where it’s supposed to go; holding the end of the tube while we prepare the pump; and even leaning forward so we can tape the tube to her pj’s without us asking to! Yes, she’s quite the little helper!

After almost a week of being in her home environment, she’s getting closer to eating the amount she was before this whole dramatic journey began almost three weeks ago! She still isn’t drinking very much. We have to put thickener in her drinks to make them a honey-like consistency. We’re thinking she really doesn’t like that texture, so she chooses not to drink. We’ll have to figure something out about that, I guess.

So, Christy and I are now becoming experts at how to work with the NG Tube.

OK…Christy’s the expert. I’m…well…I’m probably at the Novice stage. After all, she did get to watch how they did it in the hospital at night. So she has a slight advantage. 😀

While this wasn’t the mountain I expected, I still believe this was a mountain that God had moved. To all of you who prayed with me for our daughter, I cannot thank you enough! Please continue to pray for her that she re-learns how to swallow quickly and we don’t have to keep this tube in her nose for very long.
