Outer Limits: Flight of Fear at Kings Island, 1997
Outer Limits: Flight of Fear at Kings Island, 1997

I’m pretty sure I’m going to get in trouble for this picture. But that’s OK. I’ll do anything for the loyal readers of Life in the Fishbowl. Shoot, I’ll even share this picture for you not-so-loyal readers. 🙂

We took the kids to their first-ever visit to Kings Island last weekend. With all of the craziness going on at home in preparation for our trip to get Little Girl, we weren’t sure if this was a wise idea. In spite of our uneasiness about going because of all of the other things we could (and probably should) have been doing, I’m glad we went. It was a great opportunity to play with the kids without having to worry about the next project we needed to tackle.

Besides, Alyson got to go to Disney World for her birthday. It was only fitting to take Aiden to an amusement park the weekend of his birthday too, right? I’ll share more from that adventure sometime later (I promise).

Back in my Youth Ministry days, I took a couple of groups to Kings Island. The last time Christy had been, however, was when we went back in ’97. That was the year they opened Flight of Fear, where you went from something like 0-60 mph in a matter of seconds…without warning. And the headrests weren’t great for someone of Christy’s height. It rattled her head around so much (in the dark, I might add) that it kinda ruined the rest of the day for us. So she’s screaming in this picture. But it’s not for the same reasons I’m screaming. I’m having a blast and completely oblivious to the fact that she’s screaming out of pain and terror. Not good. Not good at all.

On the way down to Cincinnati, we found a rebroadcast of Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 from 1987. We had fun listening to all of the classic tunes from the late-80s. Some of them were the epitome of late-80s music, with their wailing saxophones or backup horn sections. And the guitar solos. And you can’t forget the synthesizers. Oh, the synthesizers…

Oh, and for the record, they changed Flight of Fear. They give you warning before you take off (which is OK, I guess). They also changed the restraints to lap bars instead of the overhead kind that weren’t really padded that well. And it’s not as dark inside as it used to be. It’s still a good ride, but not necessarily a “Flight of Fear” as the ride’s name states.
