Gone fishin’

After Alyson’s swim lessons, we went to an area State Park for a late-morning picnic and another round of fishing. The kids went down to the waterfront and tossed rocks in the lake while Christy and I started putting lunch together. Then I saw something move out of the corner of my eye.

At first I thought I was imagining things or it was a stick or something. Then I saw it move again. Of course, my next thought was It’s a snake!! Get away from the water, kids! If you’re new to this blog, it’s really no secret at all that I absolutely hate snakes. But that’s another story for another time.

So, I was about to tell the kids to back away from the water when I saw the thing move and I was pretty sure I saw wet, slick fur on the unidentified floating object. What was it? A beaver? An otter?

It didn’t have a flat tail, so I’d assume it’s not a beaver. We decided that it’s, what Christy called it, a “ real-life, non-zoo-i-fied otter.” It was pretty cool to see.

After lunch, we gathered up the fishing gear and headed to a shady fishing spot. We didn’t catch anything, but the kids had fun trying (and losing my bobbers)! Alyson got bored rather quickly and decided to start collecting shells that had washed ashore.

Christy also took a few pictures of the kids while we were walking to the fishin’ spot:

This one’s my favorite of Alyson. I’m not sure why:

This one’s Christy’s favorite of Alyson. She says it captures the essence of her free spirit:

As we started to wind down, I put one of those big, heavy lures on Alyson’s fishing pole – just to see what would happen. With the added weight, the kids could cast further than they’d ever cast before:

In all, yesterday was a pretty eventful day.
