Lord Stanley’s Cup

For the record, I really don’t like hockey all that much.  I started to follow it a little bit a few years ago, then they went on strike.  Whatever small amount of interest I had in the sport faded away during their oh-so-wise display of greed that oh-so-wisely increased their fan base (I need to take a shower now, since I’m dripping with sarcasm).  And now they have the nerve to complain that they have a horrible network deal?  Maybe they should have thought of that before they went on strike…or had a lockout…or who really cares what it was?

In spite of my general disregard for hockey, I always make sure to watch one game of the Stanley Cup Finals.  It really has nothing to do with the sport.  When I did my internship at Athens Church of Christ, I stayed with a great family that Summer.  Jeff was a hockey fan (Red Wings, I think…and I think they were in the Finals that year), and I sat in their living room with them and watched the Finals with them.  The next year, I was flipping through channels and came across the Finals.  I immediately thought of my host family, so I watched the game and thought of the good times I had with them.  From then on, it became an annual tradition (except for the year they canceled the season…for obvious reasons).  In such a short time, Jeff and Eve (and family) had a huge impact on my approach to pastoral work and ministering to families.

So, in honor of Jeff and Eve (and family), I’m watching the (formerly Mighty) Ducks crush the Senators in Game 5.  They’re going to hoist the Stanley Cup tonight.  I’m going to sit back and thank God for people like Jeff and Eve who have made such a difference in my life.
