Alyson’s Ear

Alyson has always had ear problems. She had tubes put in her ears by the time she was one year old. One of her tubes is still working. The other one hasn’t been working for about two years. Every few months, another round of gunk would show up in her ear (they call it “glue ear” – which is a fitting term). We’d take her to her ENT and he’d say, “Let’s try to wait it out.” He would completely disregard any suggestion of replacing the tube in her ear that was obviously not draining properly.

Finally, we asked for a second opinion about a month ago. She saw another ENT in Kingsport. He gave some new ear drops to try. Yesterday, she went back for her checkup with the new ENT. He said the ear wasn’t clearing up as much as he’d hoped, so went ahead and suggested putting a tube in her ear and removing her adenoids. The procedure is going to happen at the end of this month.

How come the first doctor wouldn’t listen to our suggestion and doctor #2 agreed with it rather quickly? It’s obvious that Alyson has had trouble hearing out of her left ear – and it’s because of this glue ear. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to deal with the problem earlier rather than later? I’m glad that it’s finally going to be resolved, but I’m a little frustrated with the first ENT.
